Disney Could Lose Big on Tomorrowland!

Even though it really doesn’t mean anything for Disney the loss they are about to suffer through doesn’t really effect their stocks or their wallets, but it does effect someone green lighting and original(ish) movie from here on out.  Yes, Tomorrowland is based off a ride, but it was a original story and that is something that is lacking throughout Hollywood.  Which is sad because while I do love seeing my favorite super hero’s, video game characters, and new movies based off books, I also love to see an entirely new world being built.

“There’s a reason you’re seeing more sequels, prequels and known properties because you never know how films like Tomorrowland or Jupiter Ascending are going to turn out,” says Handler.Jupiter was a pricey miss for Warners, Village Roadshow and other partners who paid nearly $180 million to make the sci-fi fantasy, which topped out at $181.9 million worldwide and lost about $120 million all-in.

Analyst Eric Handler of MKM Partners talked about the failure of Tomorrowland.

“Yes, they took a miss with Tomorrowland, but there are so many things working for Disney,”  noting that Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron has earned nearly $1.35 billion worldwide since May. “And coming up, there’s Inside Out (June 19), Ant-Man(July 17) and Star Wars (Dec. 18). Disney will do just fine this year.”

Once again I blame Disney for their marketing.  Every trailer for Tomorrowland barely showed anything of what the movie was actually about and this trailer which which showed most of the action scene when George Clooney and Britt Robinson trying to escape some killer androids or whatever they were.  Then they didn’t know how to market John Carter From Mars and changed the title to the boring and bland John Carter.  Which, once again, explained nothing about the film, which was actually pretty entertaining but their tampering cost them a fortune and forced director Andrew Stanton back into animation where he could lick his wounds.

Despite the flop, few fault Disney for taking a chance on a director like Bird. Says a rival executive, “When a guy like that comes to you with an original idea, and Clooney is part of the package, you’ll take the swing.”

Despite some movies that are already in the pipeline it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing many original movies for a while.

Disney Cancels Tron 3!

This news is just sad to me, despite some of the issues Tron: Legacy had I really enjoyed the film.  It was a huge upgrade over the first one in terms of effects and action and really kicked opened the door for the sequels to walk through with some potentially bold ideas on AI’s, computer software affecting the real word, etc.  Just a week after Tomorrowland opened to a weak $41.7 million in its first four days in theaters, so it’s not hard to connect the dots.  While I believe a trailer for a movie shouldn’t spoil the movie, the trailers for Tomorrowland explained nothing of what the movie was about.  it was marketed badly, not nearly as bad as John Carter, but it was still a bad choice and now another project has fallen because of the loss.
