Oscar Issac Talks Apocalypse!

After the massive success of X-Men: Days of Future Past the next in line for the increasingly popular series is their greatest threat yet in the form of Apocalypse, the first mutant.  Created in the 80’s the character of En Sabah Nur (the first one) has been a real constant threat for the X-Men.  Bryan Singer and Co released this this pic of the mutant who stands to devastate the humans and mutants in worldwide destruction in his attempt to separate the weak from the strong.

Oscar Issace let us in on his thought process behind bring one of the most dangerous mutants to life.  “With this character I am incredibly interested in the challenge of finding someone that’s psychologically interesting and compelling, and actually the spiritual aspects of the character… For me, that’s what I’m interested in, in any character that I do. It’s a meditation on ‘What’s their engine? What’s their spirit?’ Whether that’s about Llewyn Davis or Apocalypse, there’s an aspect of ‘What is it that makes them run? What’s their spirit like?’ That’s what I’m interested in finding out about that character.”

I have been waiting to see this character on screen for years and now it is finally happening.  I just hope they manipulate his voice to sound more sinister, that was one thing that always stood out in the animated X-Men tv show was when Apocalypse spoke, it was terrifying.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Official Trailer!

In 2016, one of the most successful animated franchises in the world returns with its biggest comedy adventure yet, Kung Fu Panda 3.   When Po’s long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible—learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas!

Kung Fu Panda holds a special place in my heart because it was a movie my kid and I watched over and over again so I’m pretty psyched to see another installment.

This time Po will face a supernatural villain, Kai, voiced by J.K. Simmons who has has a serious beef with the kung fu warrior trainer Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) and the Furious Five warriors: Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and Viper (Lucy Liu).

“Let’s just say Kai has been away. Now that’s he’s back, he’s not happy about life in general,” Simmons says. “One thing he finds when he returns is that pandas make him particularly unhappy.”

Kai has supernaturally strange horns and leather armor, and he uses two jade swords attached to long chains as his unusual but deadly weapon of choice. Simmons is still in the recording studio working with the evolving character.

“You have to find the nature of the beast that Kai is,” Simmons says. “There’s a lot of vocal stuff I’m throwing out there that’s somewhere between dialogue and animal growls when Kai snorts.”

If anyone has seen Whiplash then you know just how terrifying Simmons voice can be and he admits that his voice will match the psycho music instructor.

“It can become a little Fletcher-esque, the screaming,” Simmons says. “The voice can get a little ragged at the end of the day when you are making strange animal noises that you don’t normally make.”

Look for it to hit theaters January 29, 2016!

It’s amazing to me how the debut for movies just continue to rise, it all started when Spider-Man broke out the gate with over $114 million opening weekend and it’s only gone up from there with Marvel’s The Avengers setting the record at $207 million.  Yesterday reports where coming down that Jurassic World had come in with a $204 million opening weekend, setting it as the second highest opening weekend ever…well…the final reports have come in the Colin Trevorrow directed sequel has actually pulled an amazing $209 million, putting it above Marvel’s Phase One capper and has already pulled in $500 million worldwide.

While this is very good news for the franchise…there is a little film coming out this December that is primed to take the top spot away before they can truly enjoy it.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be here in December!

I’ve stated before that I didn’t really like the rebooted film, it had some cool moments but nothing I was amazed with but I’m still holding hope that they can do better with the sequel which is set to hit theaters next summer.

Iron Man Has Drawn The Line In The Sand!

Well, Robert Downey Jr has in the form of a pic he posted with the hashtag #pickyourside.  This is, of course, in reference to the plot line for Captain America: Civil War where Cap and Iron Man are at odds when the government wants to register and keep track of the super powered individuals where Tony Stark believes this is a good move, Steve and others do not believe the government should have that much control, which leads to Iron Man and others hunting down Cap and his followers.

As much as I love Iron Man I have to side with Cap on this one.  Which side will you choose?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Has Found Their Bebop!

The first half of the honorary duo that is Bebop and Rocksteady has been cast with Gary Anthony Williams taking on the role of the mutated Warthog.  Fans of the original cartoon have been waiting for the henchmen to make their big screen debut ever since the first movie but for some reason they never showed up.  While I didn’t really like the latest incarnation of the franchise, it did have some moments I really liked and it has massive amounts of room to grow and be better.

Returning cast members Megan Fox as April O’Neill, Will Arnett as Vern Fenwick as well as newcomers Stephen Amell (Arrow) as Casey Jones, and Tyler Perry was also recently cast as Baxter Stockman. All of the voice actors and motion capture actors are set to return with the exception of the voice actor and motion capture actors who helped bring Splinter, nothing has been confirmed if Tony Shalhoub will return to voice the turtles Sensei.   Michael Bay will be returning as producer alongside his producing partners from Platinum Dunes, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form and Dave Green has taken over the directors chair.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Half Shell is set to hit theaters on June 3, 2016.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron Review!

It’s really hard to believe that about eight years ago we were sitting on the outside of what Marvel was building and thinking to ourselves, ‘this will never work’.  I remembered hearing that Marvel has taken out a very large loan to start up their own studio to make their own movies.  I never believed it was possible to have the cinematic universe fruitful and growing right before my eyes and yet here we are, on the ending of their second phase.  Each of the characters who has had their own movies brought us through their stories until they collided into Joss Whedon’s second film in The Avengers films.

Now that S.H.I.E.L.D. has fallen (at least in the movie world) it’s up to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to take on the arms dealers, mad scientist, and anyone else who would carry the torch of violence and destruction and look to enslave humanity.  During a raid of a Hydra facility looking for Loki’s scepter from the first film.  Tony takes the scepter and with the help of Bruce Banner begin to create an artificial intelligence that takes the form of Ultron, a program designed to be a “suit of armor around the world” that Tony feels is the first and last line of defense against another alien attack.  Ultron very quickly realizes that the extinction of the human race is the best way to save the planet and begins to put his plan into effect.  Ultron recruits the Maximoff twins, Pietro and Wanda played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen who gained their powers of super speed and “being wierd” by being experimented on by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann) who aid Ultron systematically pick apart The Avengers.

There is so much in this movie, it’s packed with new characters, amazing actions scenes, and huge set up for the upcoming sequels and the massive two part The Avengers: Infinity War.  Everything about this movie is bigger, as you’d expect from a sequel of the magnitude, but Whedon did stayed true with his promise to make the sequel painful and more personal.  He doesn’t waste any time showing you how the they all operate as a team and why they are so feared by anyone who stands in their way, something that is excellent set-up for the Civil War plot line that will be unwinding in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

One of my favorite moments wasn’t just the Hulk vs Hulkbuster, which was pretty amazing and allowed me to share a tender moment with my step-son as he turned to me with the biggest smile as the two began to square off.  It also wasn’t Captain America taking on Ultron by himself, which was pretty amazing, or how Whedon showed the team working together as a tight unit in several actions scenes that I can’t wait to watch over and over again when it comes out on Blu-ray.  No, my favorite bit out of the entire film is was Hawkeye’s back story, (which I won’t spoil) which comes out of nowhere but doesn’t feel forced or out of place.  In fact out of everything in the film, this is the bit that fits perfectly.  It’s beautiful and completely unexpected but provides a nice insight to some of the other characters who are internally battling where they fit in the normal world.

Despite all my praise, I do have some issues and this movie is far from perfect.  While I did enjoy the action and loved how they managed to step everything up but make it fun, you can tell the movie was shredded all to hell in the editing room, which had me worried when Joss’s original cut came in around 3 1/2 hours and he bragged about how one of his main goals was to make Avengers 2 shorter then the first one.  There are scenes and lines that have been cut from the trailer (which is something I hate) and the movie has to move extremely fast to hit it’s plot points so everything feels a bit forced as far as the plot in concerned.

There was also a lot of setup for other characters in other films coming out and there were moments where it felt that scenes were missing that lead up to where the heroes and villains colliding. There is a few scenes where Thor has a vision and decides to look into what he had seen in Asgard, which if anyone remembers Thor: The Dark World (SPOILERS) Loki has taken over as King of Asgard, under the guise of Odin.  It’s not fully explained how Thor is able revisit his dream, he just tells us he has to jump into some pool of water in a cave, he jumps in, and suddenly see’s what we’ve all known is that someone *cough Thanos cough* is after the Infinity Stones.

the avengers: age of ultron, film monster, joss whedon, marvel, disney

I’ve heard many complain on how quickly Ultron actually became Ultron and why I don’t have a problem with this considering he’s a program that doesn’t have to eat or sleep, I do feel that there were a few scenes missing to really flesh him out as well, but James Spader kills it as the murderous android and has managed to put himself up there with Loki and Wilson Fisk, as one of the great villains, something Marvel severely lacks in otherwise.

I really, really enjoyed the film and I highly recommend going to see it but I am warning you, if you are new to this series, this isn’t the movie to start, much like WB did with the later Harry Potter films, if you haven’t been on board since the beginning, don’t look for the movie to take the time to catch you up and while this doesn’t have the awe the first film had of the team getting together nor the emotional punch many were expecting, it is outstanding achievement in the blockbuster scene and fun film.

Dredd Writer Says Dredd 2 Isn’t Coming!

Written by Alex Garland and starring Karl Urban, Dredd was one of those movies that no one thought would be any good because of the mess the Sly Stallone stinker left us with, but, it turns out, the creative forces behind the 2012 film knew exactly what they were doing and managed to crank out a legit, pretty amazing action movie so of course it flopped.  Fans rallied to get the film it’s due, signing petitions, bying the DVD’ and Blurays in droves, showing the movie to anyone they can so we can show the producers that an audience is there but according to Alex Garland, we’re wasting out time.

dredd, sequel, film monster, karl urban, alex garland“There isn’t, as far as I can tell, going to be a Dredd sequel. The basic mechanics of film financing say that if you make a film that loses a ton of money, you’re not going to get a sequel. And that’s basically what happened.

And I understand and appreciate the support the film has had, and the campaigns that have existed for it, and it’s really genuinely gratifying — I love it in all respects except one, which is when I hear about people buying copies of the DVD in order to boost sales and to change the figures. And what I want to say to them is, “Don’t do that. Keep your money.” Because the people that are making the decisions are much colder and harder than that. And the graphs they’re looking at are not really going to be sufficiently dented by that.

So the support for the film is truly appreciated. But if there is going to be a sequel, it’s not going to be me and the team of people who worked on the previous film, it’s going to be another bunch of people. And good luck to them, and I hope it happens. I really do. I hope they do a better job than we did.”

This is just sad.  Dredd  is a perfect example of a good moving getting ignored while crap is continually getting pushed out and what he ways really doesn’t make complete sense in today’s society.  There are many sequels to movies that didn’t do all that great the first time, same thing with TV shows that didn’t have a great first season.  I think they just need to really convince the bigwigs that a sequel is bound to do better because of all the fans it’s gained since the reboot was released, but alas, this is terrible news…I’m going to go lay down for a while…

Incredible 2 Is On The Way!

It’s a shame FOX never tapped Brad Bird to direct the Fantastic Four movie because Brad Bird nailed it with The Incredibles which had a world where super hero’s existed and they fought crime and super villains until a lawsuit is filed against Mr. Incredible for saving a man who didn’t want to be saved even though he was trying to kill himself (which I found hilarious because that is something we would do in American then and now).  Just like the millions of fans I instantly fell in love with the movie and couldn’t wait for a sequel…cut to nearly twelve years later and it appears that a sequel is coming next year…which seems odd considering it takes years to make these and Brad Bird has been working on Tomorrowland by Disney.

the incredibles, pixar, brad bird, gambitconThe storyline for The Incredibles 2 has been recently released and to be honest…this could go either way.

Accordingly, in the sequel, Mr. and Mrs. Incredibles, featuring Bob and Helen, have decided not to be too active with their superhero crime fighting waysand allow their two teenage children Violet and Dash to do the work for them.

The two are now considered the greatest superhero in the world while their parents focus on rearing their now six-year-old younger brother Jack-Jack, whose super power ability is to change faces, reports Ecumenical News.

Unfortunately, unlike his superhero parents and his sister and brother, Jack-Jack cannot control his powers. His parents Bob and Helen have also become very protective of him following Jack-Jack’s kidnapping by a villain. Eventually, Jack-Jack became an outcast and a rebel.

It was during this time that Jack-Jack realized that he can only control his super power abilities if he is angry or becomes villainous. Unfortunately, it was another villain, which speculations say is to be known as Syndrome, who first saw these unique traits of Jack-Jack and he thus mentored him to become a great villain under his tutelage.

I really hope Brad Bird can deliver again, The Incredibles is one of my favorite animated movies and this is one sequel I’ve been waiting years for.

Co-Director Chris Williams Talks BIG HERO 6 Sequel!

Walt Disney Animation’s Big Hero 6 ended up being the surprise hit of 2014 for many people. In addition to nabbing an Oscar nod for ‘Best Animated Feature’, it has also raked in over $500 million at the Box Office

“We made ourselves vulnerable once the doors were closed, when we were in the sacred space of the story room.”

Given the film’s international success, talk soon shifted towards the potential of a sequel. When quizzed about it, Williams chose to refer to Pixar head honcho John Lasseter’s phillosophy: No sequel will ever get made unless the directors want one and feel strongly that there is a story that needs to be told.” He then went on to state: If it’s not a great story, it won’t be a great movie. The crew deserves a great story. And we have expectations from the audience, who grew up with Disney animation. They deserve a great story too.”

big hero six, film monster, sequel, disney

These quotes are in-line with an older statement from Williams’ co-director, Don Hall – made around the time of movie’s release back in November:

“We’ll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we’re exhausted from the ordeal of making it… We haven’t talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal.”

Yeah…I don’t think so, when Disney says get that sequel out you get it out, and John Lasseter isn’t one to talk about quality and story with two Cars and Plane’s movies under his belt.  I really enjoyed Big Hero Six and really do hope they continue on with stories that actually continue a good story and not just rush out sequel after sequel but when that mouse wants that money, it’s going to get it’s money.
