James Wan To Produce Mortal Kombat Film!

James Wan, who is riding high off the phenomal success of Furious 7 has been really busy lately.  He’s returning to direct the sequel to The Conjuring with The Conjuring 2: The Endfield Poltergeist and he signed on to direct the Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa with Warner Bros/DC and Robotech under Sony.  Now he has signed on to produced a new Mortal Kombat movie for New Line Cinema and Broken Road.

Written by Oren Uziel (Mortal Kombat: Legacy) and Dave Callahan (The Expendables, Godzilla) —  the film ‘centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’.

Now, just reading that description just makes it sound horrible.  That isn’t what Mortal Kombat is and I hope that is something that will be changed once Wan assumes full producing duties or someone just got the synopsis wrong.  The first Mortal Kombat film was a lot of fun, much like the games were more hardcore then any before it, the movie was the first video game adaption that was pretty real with it’s martial art violence and a few of the fight scenes were pretty incredible.  Wan signing on could be a good step towards getting a good Mortal Kombat film as long as they don’t pull a Fan4stic and create something that is completely devoid of the original content.

James Wan To Direct Aquaman!

Furious 7 director James Wan has been hired by Warner Bros. to direct Jason Momoa’s Aquaman solo film.

Charles Roven, the films producer, talked about hiring the Australian director.

The Aquaman film will be a major tent-pole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

“James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen, and Jason has a dynamic presence that commands your attention. Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film.”

Wan will also be supervising the script by Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “300: Rise of an Empire”). The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder.

I think this is an awesome idea.  Wan is one of my favorite directors, starting out in horror with Saw and two of my favorites The Conjuring and Insidious, the man hit it really big with Furious 7, which I felt he was using as a demo reel for his chance to direct a comic book movie anyway, has grossed over a billion dollars.

Aquaman is scheduled to hit theaters July 27, 2018.
