Halloween Returns Is Coming!

Dimension Films and Trancas International Films have officially announced that production will start in July on Halloween Returns, which continues the story of serial killer Michael Myers who was last seen on screen in Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2.

Michael Myers. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the writers behind the Saw films, post Leigh Whannell, have written the script, which is said to offer “a terrifying new installment of the classic franchise originated by John Carpenter”. Dunstan will also direct the film. Malek Akkad is set to produce with Matthew Stein as executive producer.

“Michael Myers has taken a long break from the big screen and we know fans are eager to see him return. We are excited to be back in business with Trancas and look forward to bringing one of the scariest installments of this classic franchise to audiences worldwide,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman The Weinstein Company & Dimension Films.

Malek Akkad added,  “The legacy of Halloween is something that Trancas is very proud of, and I look forward to working together again with Bob and Dimension to continue that tradition.”

It is unclear whether or not the new film will follow rebooted film or if it will instead return to the continuity established in the original eight films.

I’ll admit that the rebooted Halloween films had their issues, especially the second one, which had a huge tonal shift in the characters, filming style which took on the grungy look and didn’t really gel with me…except one scene.  When Annie (Danielle Harris) is attacked by Michael Myers in her bathroom, you see him going for her, then the camera sits outside the house and you hear her pleading for her life as Michael brutally murders her.  It was pretty chilling and even now it’s a hard scene for me to sit through.  I’m always down for more Michael Myers films but I’m well aware that this project can turn into garbage in a hot minute.  Here’s hoping they don’t mess it up.
